Numerical Investigation of the Hydrodynamic Characteristics of 3-Fin Surfboard Configurations

Surfing is a popular sport, with the associated market forecast to reach 2.6 billion US dollars by 2027. In published literature, there range of investigations into performance surfboard fins. Some studies model single fin or review different layouts and surface designs. However, effects individual design features on flow dynamics are not well understood. This study provides numerical analysis thruster aspects (rake, depth, base length) resultant key indicators (i) lift drag coefficients, (ii) turbulent kinetic energy. The models were simulated in Ansys Fluent R19.1, solving steady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations using SST k−ω turbulence at velocity 7 m/s. results indicate fins varies more post-stall. variations rake showed biggest impact intensity an angle ≥20°. length exhibited coefficient trends greater small angles but significant losses high attack. depth affected forces rather than indicators. Based these simulations, proposed set was developed that presented lowest after stall point.
